Hello Everyone!
I was sorry to hear about the horrific Amagasaki train accident on April 25th. It is just such a shock to find out that the reason why the train crashed was due to driver error and also the driver was only 23 years old. The news here in the U.S. mentioned the crash and said that it was one of the worst crashes in Japanese history.
Japan railways has such a good reputation regarding the safety of the rail services and any traveller to Japan marvels at the accuracy and precision of the train drivers as they keep to the set train schedule. We all hope for a speedy recovery for the survivors and think of the families of the victims that had their lives taken away in such a needless accident.

みなさんこんにちわ！

4月25日の尼崎の列車事故、本当にお気の毒に思う。23才の若い運転手の運転ミス等々のために、あんな悲惨な事故が起こってしまったのかと思うととてもショックな事ね。アメリカでのニュースは日本史上最悪の衝突事故のひとつと報道している。
日本の鉄道は安全性では評判で、日本への旅行者は、みんなその正確さと運行計画にきちんと従った運転手に驚いていたの。生存者と無用な事故のために命を失ってしまった犠牲者のご家族のいち早い回復心からお祈りするわ。
I want some Manju
When I first moved to Japan I was living in an area where nobody spoke any English at all so everything was a mystery. I lived near a small bakery and one day I decided to go and buy what I thought was a donut with chocolate in the center. It looked like chocolate but when I took a bite the inside had a strange taste and texture. I looked at the donut carefully but I still could not see what it was. I bought another donut the next day and asked a Japanese friend who spoke English. They laughed and told me that this filling was called manju and that it was very popular in Japan. Once I knew what manju was I really liked it and now that I am not living in Japan I really miss manju!
最初に日本に来たとき、誰も英語が話せないところに住んでいて、何もかもがミステリーだったわ。小さなパン屋さんのそばに住んでたのだけど、ある日、ドーナッツかチョコレートが中に入っていると思って買ってみたの。かじった時は、チョコレートの様に見えたけど中身はとても変な味と食感。注意深く中身を見たけど、それが何だか判らなかった。翌日違ったドーナッツを買って英語が話せる友達に聞いたら、彼らは笑って、それはまんじゅうといって日本ではとてもポピュラーだって教えてくれたわ。一度まんじゅうを知ったら、とても好きになったのよ。日本に住んでいない今は、妙にまんじゅうが恋しくなるのよ。
Do you want milk in your green tea?
People in the US are seeing the benefits of green tea as an antioxidant as well as being a healthy alternative to the more familiar black teas. There is however some problem because people often put milk in their black tea so they think that they have to do the same with green tea. I was amazed to see milk in green tea at a friend's house so I told her that usually green tea is taken without milk. My friend was relieved because she said she thought it tasted terrible with milk. She tried green tea without milk and loved the taste so I am sure anyone from Japan would be amazed at seeing milk in green tea.

緑茶にミルクいかがですか?

アメリカの人々は、緑茶の効能をポピュラーな紅茶とともに老化防止だけでなく健康にも良いと思っているの。
でも、しばしば問題が・・・というのは、紅茶にはミルクを入れているので、緑茶にもそうしなくてはいけないと思っていたらしいの。友達の家で緑茶にミルクを入れているのを見てびっくり。彼女に緑茶には普通ミルクは入れないって教えてやったのよ。彼女はミルク入りの緑茶はひどい味だと思って飲んでいたらしく、ホッとした表情だったわ。ミルクなしの緑茶を飲むと、おいしいって。きっと日本から来た人が、緑茶にミルクを入れているのを見たら驚いたでしょうね。
